Christopher Leon
Hailing from Austin, Texas, Christopher Leon is probably an artist you wouldn't think was born and raised in the South. Actually, upon first listen, it might be difficult to even detect where he's from. One thing is obvious though, he's truly a scholar in the art of hip-hop.
Leon fell in love with hip-hop early, and begin rapping around the age of 5. His godmother always reminds him of the days when he would be rapping about whatever, barely even knowing how to spell the words he was saying, but somehow putting them together to rhyme at such a young age. He actually started writing at the age of 10, but left it alone for many years. He stayed a fan until around the age of 20, which is when he first started to pursue music seriously. His first complete project, aptly titled Playoff Season, was a message that he was ready to rap with the best of them. The 21 track project was filled with the type of production you would expect from A Tribe Called Quest or Common, even using a few samples from each of them. The lyrics and the voice however couldn't be compared to any other artist doing hip-hop. It's release was in the Winter of 2009, and the overall feel fit perfect with the season.
The project was free, which Leon stated was how it was supposed to be on the first track, derailing anybody who would attempt to resell. His theory: I just wanted any and everyone to listen. He released one more project the following year after getting a bit of following, a project a lot more personal titled The Heartbreak Kid. It was clear he was set to do something different and that was make an hip-hop album all about love and heartbreak. The tone of the project was overall a bit more serious than the first but the progression in the lyrics was evident.
After taking a bit of a break from it all (due to feeling like the hip-hop scene had become saturated and in the process losing a bit of the passion for the music), he's now prepping his 3rd project, the first in four years titled "Green Lights". The idea is simple, it's a collection of songs you can ride to. However the title itself is a bit of double meaning, and refers to not stopping for what you want, just keep going as if every light was green on your destination. It's chilled riding music but motivational indeed.
